Rhaphiolepis umbellata (Hawthorn, yeddo hawthorne, Indian hawthorne)
Rhaphiolepis umbellata is an evergreen shrub that typically grows to 3-6 m in height and about the same width. Leaves are dark green, thick and leathery. The fragrant white to light pink flowers are in a 10-12 cm cluster. The blue-black berries ripen in fall and tend to be hidden among the leaves. They are held on the shrub into the winter to serve as a food source for birds. This shrub withstands drought once established. Quite salt tolerant and tough, it is in need of full or partial sun. It is good for a sturdy hedge in a sunny, well drained area where very low maintenance is desired. In landscaping, it can be used as a single specimen or trained as a small tree and can be included in the beach resort landscape projects since it is very salt tolerant.
