Elaeocarpus decipiens (Japanese Blueberry tree)
Japanese blueberry is a slow growing broadleaf evergreen large shrub or small tree with lustrous dark green leaves which turn bright scarlet just before leaf-drop and are very eye-catching. The new leaves are bronze colored which mature to a bright green for summer. The flowers occur in late spring or early summer. The flowers are small but very fragrant and followed by dark blue-black berries that looks like olives. When they drop can be messy. Grow Japanese blueberry in a rich, fertile, well-draining neutral soil. Full sun is best for growth and flowering, but partial sun is acceptable. This slow growing but large tree is best situated in a spacious landscape as a shade tree, and with such dense foliage would be fantastic as a tall hedge or screen.
