Weigela hybrida (Old Fashioned Weigela)
Weigela is native to N. China, Korea and Japan. It is a dense rounded or spreading shrub reaching 1.5-2 m in height and may spread as much as 2-3 m. The arching branches develop a fountain-like habit when left undisturbed. The leaves are simple, rough in texture and they have no fall color change. The flower is a funnel-shaped tubular flower pink or rose in color (many other as varieties) bloom profusely in spring, with a sparse and scattered repeat bloom often occurring in mid to late summer. Fruit is inconspicuous. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Needs full sun for best flowering and foliage color, but will tolerate very light or sun dappled shade. Prune to shape immediately after flowering. Tolerates air pollution. Propagate by stem cuttings or seed. Used as flowering hedges or in mass plantation.
