Quercus ilex (Evergreen Oak, Holly Oak, Holm Oak)

Shade tree native to the Mediterranean regions of southern Europe (Spain to Greece).  Deep green leaves with furry undersides resembling holly leaves and  having small spines on the leaf edges .The acorns are oval to rounded in shape and are edible although bitter. This species of oak has been noted to be favorable for the production of truffles under its branches.Grow holly oak in full to partial sun in any fertile, deep soil that has good drainage. It tolerates drought, heat, saltspray.  It makes a park, shade or street tree. This oak species is susceptible to the sudden oak death disease.
