Plant Profile

Echium candicans (Pride of Madeira)

The pride of Madeira is a significant fast growing sub-shrub. Its upright stems have whorls of gray-green leaves covered with soft white hairs. Touching the foliage may cause a skin irritation, so wear gloves when pruning or handling. In spring and summer its produces a tall flower spike with hundreds of small blue or lavender-blue flowers which is very attractive to bees and butterflies. It needs full sun and can tolerate any soil type. Drought and salt tolerant therefore can be used in xeriscaping. Also could be used in a mixed border, or as a specimen. Be aware that it might escape and populate natural areas.
