Prosopis juliflora (Prosopis)
Prosopis is a large shrub or small tree native to Mexico. As the tree is adopted to desert conditions its root system grows down deep to find the water table. The tree can grow up to 6-9 m and has large thorns. The leafs are bipinnate and bears clusters of tiny, fluffy, honey-rich, whitish green flowers in spring, followed by large pods. This desert tree requires full sun and relatively dry soil. Can tolerate drought and salt. Plant it in masses to form a hedge, or limb up its lower branches and use it as a specimen tree.
