Calliandra haematocephala (Powderpuff)
Powderpuff is an evergreen, fast growing shrub or small tree reaching a height of 6 meters. It’s a native to Bolivia. The flower blooms most when days are short (from fall to spring) with distinctive magenta-red flowers and profuse a very pleasant fragrant. It attracts butterflies. The leaves are compound made up of pairs of small silky leaflets which are glossy copper when new and turn darker with time.
The tree is best grown in sandy soils and full sun with regular watering while still young but should require no special care once established except an occasional pruning to keep it within bounds.
