Plant Profile

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Filifera Arurea" (Sawara cypress, Japanese Falsecypress)

Japanese falsecypress is an evergreen conifer native to Japan. It comes in a wide variety of cultivars, some of which or compact or dwarf, and feature different leaf types. The wild-type has needle-like foliage when young to scale-like when older. The fissured bark peels off. Japanese falsecypress does best in moist, acidic soil with moderate winters and summers. The trees should be protected from harsh winds. It can tolerate drought, but must be watered if it gets too hot. The pollen can cause allergies, and the foliage may cause skin irritation.
