Spartium junceum (Spanish broom)
Spanish Broom is native to the Mediterranean region. It is a large deciduous shrub with upright rush-like stems which are glabrous, dark green and have very few small, linear leaves. The small leaves that appear on each shoot fall soon after they become fully developed giving the plant a leafless appearance year-round, leaving only the green stems to take over the process of photosynthesis. It Flowers from May to August, with fragrant, yellow pea-lshaped flowers that are grouped in sparse, terminal racemes, 30-40cm long. Dark brown seed pods follow the flowers. It grows well in full sun and almost in any soil, and is a drought and salt resistant plant. This plant is potentially invasive in mild climates . All parts of plant are poisonous if ingested. Use it in the shrub or mixed border or as a barrier hedge
