Gardenia jasminoides (Gardenia, Cape-Jasmine)

Gardenia is an evergreen shrub with glossy dark green leaves and its well known for its waxy white extremely fragrant flowers. Although Gardenia tolerates wide variety of soils it needs acid soil with high organic matter content. If not the leaves will turn yellow and the plant will look unhealthy. The gardenia needs yearly frequent fertilizer. Does best in part shade or part sun. Require pruning after blooming as the flowers appears on the previous year shoots. Problems include powdery mildew, leaf spots, dieback, anthracnose, sooty mold, whiteflies, mealy bugs, scales, aphids and spider mites. These insects are often serious pest. It can be used best as container plants, where the soil can be managed easily. Other way of usage could be border plant or specimen.
