Cordyline terminalis (Ti Plant)
A Ti plant is native to Southeast Asia, and the tropical pacific including Hawaii. Native Hawaiians have a strong belief that growing Ti plants around the home protects and brings good luck to the home. Ti is a palm-like evergreen shrub with a usually un-branched trunk. It can grow up to 3 m tall. The leaves are 30-50 cm long, may be glossy green, reddish purple, or marked with various combinations of purple, red, yellow or white. Mature plants produce yellowish or reddish flowers that are sweetly scented. The fruits are red berries. The plant does well in partial shade to nearly full sun. Ti needs a high humidity; otherwise it will suffer from drying leaves. Needs average watering and can be subjected to temperature less than 13 C. It makes a very nice specimen shrub due to its interested leaf color. Could be grown inside as a houseplant in containers.
