Plant Profile

Tamarix tetranda (Tamarisk)

Tamarix tetrandra or Tamarisk is a deciduous tree or shrub. The young wood is red, leaves are needle-like pale green not showy at all. It gives a feathery effect to the whole plant. In mid-spring produces numerous dark pink buds which open into pale pink flowers in clusters, up to 5 cm long. The plant is extremely tolerant of maritime exposure. Place it on the full sun, takes drought, salt and any type of soil well. The pruning must be carried out after the flowering as this occurs on the old wood. Used as a bush, specimen on lawns, in groups in parks, and hedges; as a tree, free standing specimen in gardens. The plant is a good choose for creating a green area near the sea, even on the sea front.
