Plant Profile

Quercus coccinea (scarlet oak)

Scarlet oak got its name from the fall coloring. This tall and deciduous tree is native to the United States. When young the canopy is more pyramidal but later on it turn to be open and rounded. Its one of the fastest growing oak species. The deeply lobed leaves turn bright red in the fall and the acorns are eaten by wildlife. It preferes full sun and well drained soil.
